Legendary - Interesting Checkpoint Phenomenon

I've been chugging through in Legendary, and have noticed some "interesting"
behaviour. If you die really quickly about 5 times or so, the game may
decide, without asking, to demote you to the previous checkpoint. This can
be annoying as hell. I suppose it's the game's "hopeless situation"
resolution, but I would like to be *asked* before such drastic measures are
taken.

(Where did this come up?) Good question... I'm on GraveMind. I'm on my way
to rescure the marines. This begins with a long decent that drops you right
in the middle of the detention ward, with two brutes next to you, and
jackals and grunts on opposite sides. All shooting at you. This is a bad
thing on Legendary.
