| Hey guys, Just wondering if anyone has played Halo on both Xbox and PC? How does the PC version differ to the Xbox version, apart from the obvious online play? Performance wise, are there any significant differences? I was thinking of getting the PC version for the mods, as I have finished the Xbox version on Legendary a number of times, and am hanging for Halo 2. Just wanted a bit of Halo variety before 2 is here. Cheers | |||

| Well I don't own the PC version but I don't find it worth it, think about all the crap you need to just a good gameplay. But that whole online thing has been overcome, check out over at http://www.xbconnect.com I don't think you need a mod chip for it to work all you need is a comp with at least DSL connection. but mod wise you might not be able to completely transform levels and stuff but with a little $50 mod chip you can do almost anything that I have ever thought of doing, and I have though allot. But if you have a comp that is capable of playing the game I would suggest going and getting a PC copy. | If you like mouse and keyboard for FPS games .. then there is only 1 way to go .. PC version .. besides the PC version has been polished more and the multiplayer is one of the entertaining games since Doom2 multiplayer or Unreal Tournament. (before they decided on enhancing the graphics so much you now cant even see things because of all the visual effects).. Who doesn't like hopping in a wart hog with a pal and driving across the map on quest to capture the flag?! My PC is a little older than the XBOX (Athlon XP 1800, 768 mb RAM, onboard nForce video/audio, circa 2001) and I found the single player experience to be identical. I prefer the PC multiplayer experience. It has more maps and more vehicles. Also, the PC version does allow 16 people to use their own monitor. I don't like playing Halo in split screen on my TV. Although this is not true of all FPS, I do prefer the XBOX controller over the mouse/keyboard for Halo. Most people I know disagree with me. | |||

| Well Ken I think the first thing you should do is pick yourself up a video card. Onboard crap sucks!!!! Oh and the PC version is way better. I have played people that think they are all good because they a controler and such, but none of them has even been a threat. I think that most people (if they would give it a honest try) would agree that using the mouse and keyboard beats anything a controller can offer. I use to be a controller freak ever since 007 came out for N64, but I built myself a computer and now I wouldn't trade in my mouse and keyboard for anything. Plus you can get yourself a game pad thingy (it's like a section of keyboard but all the buttons are lined up) and you have much much more options right at your finger tips!!! Well that's my 2 cents worth, later. Out of curiosity, why is the mouse/keyboard control system better than the gamepad? I'm assuming the main difference is the mouse vs. the right thumbstick (the left thumbstick vs. keyboard seems to be a wash). Is it the 1st order control given by the mouse vs. 2nd/3rd order of the thumbstick? Is it dpi precision of the controller? Is it the number of buttons? Is it simply the amount of user experience? Would something like the mouse/Nostromo combination be better? I'm just wondering if anyone had any thoughts? | |||

A mouse gives you greater precision over aiming than a controller does, by far. It's not even close. Part of that is because nobody has better fine motor control over their right thumb than over the position of their entire hand; another part of that is that to aim with a thumbstick requires TWO motions--one to put the reticle in motion, and another to cause it to stop moving. Bottom line is, the mouse beats the controller for precision aiming. The xbox compensates for this by providing auto-aim for console players, but this is a poor imitation, and can actually be detrimental at times. Many are the times I've intended to run in one direction, and have been diverted by the auto-aim turning me in the direction of some passing grunt. So what is a controller better at? Precision running. If you use a mouse to aim, you're probably using a keyboard to move. So, you can move in four ordinal directions. With a controller can move in any direction easily, fluidly, and naturally. With skill, you can mimic some of this movement facility using a mouse and keyboard with precise simultaneous turning, strafing, and running. However, the imitation is slight and poor. Which is more important? Well, for a game like Halo, it's more often useful to accurately aim than to accurately run, so probably the keyboard users have the edge. However, the difference is sufficiently small that preference can easily make the xbox the better choice. I like the controller better, because that is my preference, having tried both.

Great summary. I used to play PC games with keybourd/mouse and I never liked console first shooters for the lack of control. That changed when I played Halo. The controller is very well configured. It makes it very easy to run and aim and shoot at the same time. I agree that it is very much easier to aim with a mouse. But what I like about Halo is that I can walk around an enemy while shooting him (aiming and strafing at the same speed). This is not hard to do at Halo and is very usefull. I think this is very hard to do with a mouse and keyboard. Especially, because you can't move the mouse to one direction for a long time (The space of the mouse movement is limited, because of you desk and keyboard etc.). I think this is a big advantage of Halo on Xbox. Also I find it easier to run backwords with Halo controller than mouse/keyboard. Another big advantage is: I can play Halo in the evening from my bed with one controller. I don't have to sit behind my desk (like I do all day). I find that fare more relaxing. - Sty -

I'm with you in all opinions, though my Mac (Yes, I use a Mac), while certainly not as suited for gaming as the PC, comes with the best graphics card and everything you need to get perfect performance, which rocks. Macs do have their advantages! Just so few of them that PC totally wins in the gaming area.
