What part, specifically, are you having trouble with? For general gameplay situations, there are several excellent legendary difficulty guides on gamefaqs.com. There's a good step-by-step walkthrough written by Asmodeus, downloadable from halo.bungie.org. For other advice, there's us. If you still can't beat it, then nothing but more practice will help you.

| I am still working on beating the game on Legendary. I am at T & R, which you can see at my other post. This seems to be the hardest level. Which I agree (until so far). For the people who did beat it already on Legendary the following questions. How long did it take you to beat it? (In hours of playing the game) Can anybody make it through a level without dying once? (Looks impossible to me) Did you play the levels in normal order or did you play some (easy) levels before others? (I already did my favorite (AOTCR), because I was stuck at T & R) - Sty - | |||

| Are you doing it co-op or single player? I've done it co-op, and on single player I've beaten The Pillar of Autumn, Halo, The Silent Cartographer, 343 Guilty Spark, and The Library, and I'm working on the rest. It would take way too long to give you help on parts of the levels themselves, but I can give you some basic tips. First of all, in the Covenant levels (pillar of autumn through assault on the control room) having a Plasma Pistol or Needler combined with a human Pistol is usually the best combo. Take out Grunts with small bursts of needles, normal plasma pistol shots, or the pistol. Snipe Jackals with the pistol in the notch in their shield where they hold their gun or blow out the shield with the plasma pistol and then take them down as if they were grunts. Unload a clip of needles into an Elite, or blow out their shields with an overcharged plasma pistol shot, then snipe them with the pistol. Go melee with Hunters, sidestep their swing, and pop them in the back with the pistol. Above all, stay behind cover. Go for one enemy at a time, retreat if too many get in your face, and if you're taking damage and you can't see the target, run rather than looking for it and approach again. Never attack enemies until your shields are fully charged. Use Plasma Grenades frequently, as the grunts and elites drop plenty. Save your Fragmentation Grenades for perfect moments, when the enemy is clumped together or is coming out of a narrow, enclosed space. Try to memorize the Checkpoints. You will generally die several times on each one before you're good, so learn from your mistakes and take them a different way. Sometimes killing every enemy isn't the best way to go. Many places are easier with stealth. If enemies have specific patrol routes, or if they're standing still, try to sneak up and melee them rather than open fire. The bases with sleeping grunts are often the easiest places to stealth kill the other enemies. It's sort of a sign that this is a stealth base. When the Flood come, go for Shotgun and Pistol. Use the Shotgun on the Combat Forms, the Pistol on the Carrier Forms, and melee or ignore the Infection Forms. Back up as you do so if there are a whole lot of them like where you first find them in 343 Guilty Spark, but never waste ammo on them. The Shotgun is also useful against Covenant, but try not to waste too much ammo with it. If enemies are fighting against each other, hang back and let one side win (usually the Flood) and then mop up the rest. If you have to fight Covenant, you may want to drop the Shotgun in favor of a Plasma Pistol or a Needler. Sentinels are best dealt with using a Plasma Pistol. Charge it up and fire. One-shot kill. Stay away from them when they fall, as they do slight damage if they land on you. If you get a Rocket Launcher, I'd drop the Shotgun, Needler, or Plasma Pistol (your primary weapon). If you get a Sniper Rifle, drop the Pistol. If vehicles or Shades are available, get them and use their weapons on the enemies instead of wasting real ammo. These are pretty much the basic strategies for Legendary. You'll expand them and develop new ones as you go along. The weapon setup is a matter of opinion, so you should experiment around to find the best one. Don't use the same weapons you used on the other difficulties, as they're no longer useful. | I beat it in co-op, so I guess that counts. It took us about three months. We have made it through The Silent Cartographer without either of us dying. In The Maw we never both died before someone respawned. We played them in order more or less, but we put The Truth and Reconciliation between Keyes and The Maw. (In hours of playing the game) I didn't use a stopwatch. Several weeks, chronologically speaking. > Can anybody make it through a level without dying once? (Looks > impossible to me) It's not so difficult. I still die occasionally, but mainly from things like flipping a warthog on the final jump, or forgetting about some rocket flood, or deciding I'm John Wayne. Oh, yes, and I die/restart frequently in the two actually hard battles of the game, in Halo and T&R. If you die too frequently, change your playstyle. Hide more often. Recharge more often. Shoot from cover. Tackle a scene from a different angle. Use a different weapon. Play more slowly. > Did you play the levels in normal order or did you play some (easy) > levels before others? In order. When I got the game, I played halfway through on Normal, then beat it on Easy, finished normal, beat it on Heroic, then beat it on Legendary. | |||

A rule of thumb: check the number of plasma grenades you have every minute or two. If you have 4 grenades three times in a row, then you aren't throwing enough of them. > Save your > Fragmentation Grenades for perfect moments, when the enemy is clumped > together or is coming out of a narrow, enclosed space. Some flood drop fraggies, so you can throw more of them in flood levels. Fraggies are much better than plasmas on the flood. > Sentinels are best dealt with using a Plasma Pistol. Charge it up and > fire. One-shot kill. There's an exception to this: don't use charged shots at the beginning of Two Betrayals. It doesn't take many plasma shots to kill a sentinel anyways, and if you use charged shots, you're going to have to take on several elites and grunts at long range with little cover in the next scene using an almost-dry plasma pistol and a shotgun. Using regular shots will leave you with an almost-full plasma pistol. The difference is substantial. > > If you get a Rocket Launcher, I'd drop the Shotgun, Needler, or Plasma > Pistol (your primary weapon). The rocket launcher is great to have in a VERY few situations, but you could finish the game without it, and not miss it much. Never trade the shotgun for the rocket launcher, lest you be very happy for eight shots, then very unhappy for the short remainder of your life. > If vehicles or Shades are available, get them and use their > weapons on the enemies instead of wasting real ammo. Never use a Shade. Shades are sitting ducks for rockets, banshees, ghosts, grunts with plasma grenades, wraiths, jackals, hunters, and their fire goes way too slow to hit much, and it doesn't do much damage to what it DOES hit. There's only one place in the game where you should use a shade: in the canyons of Keyes, when a lengthy stream of flood pour around a corner where a shade is conveniently situated.

(Looks impossible to > me) I've made it through every level except T&R single player legendary without being respawned. I've made it through T&R without dying - but not without Keyes dying, and vice-versa. I haven't really been trying to do this for a while, but in general, it just takes patience.

| I've beaten it solo maybe 10+ times on Legendary on Xbox, although not always continuously. Fastest continous time was about 20 hours. Legendary is a lot of work sometimes and when I want a break I'll go back to Heroic and have some fun. Legendary is much harder than Heroic in certain parts, so skill and practice make a difference. On Legendary the big things are to use the best weapon combos for each situation and to be quick to adapt to different weapons. Also watch your shield and health meters! Duck behind cover when you can recharge. Learn where life packs are. Use them only when necessary or before you can't go back to get them. Shield breakers: Plasma pistols, Plasma rifles, Needlers & esp plasma gernades save them mostly for Elites and Jackels but will work on Grunts and Flood, not the best for Hunters or vehicles (exp gernades) Projectile weapons: Better saved as secondaries to finish off weakened Elites or Jackels but are still good for Grunts, Hunters and Flood; exceptions are the shotgun, which I prefer on any enemy close up esp Flood and the rocket launchers which is OK on any at distance. Sniper rifle can kill any enemy except Flood and vehicles at distance if you hit them in the right spot but is slow firing, reloading and therefor not real good close in. Close-in weapons: Shotgun (best), plasma rifle, assault rifle, pistol, plasma pistol; rookies should avoid rocket launcher and needler because of blast radiuses and be very careful of gernade use. Distance weapons: pistol, sniper rifle, plasma pistol, needler, rocket launcher - can snipe. Gernades are good for medium-long once you are skilled with them. Needler and pistol are an especially good combo for taking Elites at a distance. My favorite combo at the end of Keyes and beginning of Halo. Gernades - Take the most skill and finess of any weapon. Plasma: good for Elites, vehicles, Jackels; sticks to living tissue, Elite energy sheilds, certain mechanical assys Fragmentation: good for Flood, Grunts, Hunters; bounce around hallways & corners well Often I have replayed a favorite level over many times to really get it down or vary my tactics or strategy (Most noteably Halo, T&R, Assault and 2 Betrayals) Playing all of Halo through from beginning (Pillar of Autumn through the Maw) to end continuously on Legendary I've done at most 5 times. I really hate the Library. PS - on my PC laptop I must slow refresh and detail down to get decent gameplay. I have yet to try Legendary. Not as smooth as Xbox. > From: "Sty" <rensono@spamgmx.net> > Organization: Planet Internet > Newsgroups: microsoft.public.xbox.halo > Date: Mon, 23 Aug 2004 13:00:38 +0200 > Subject: Beaten the game on legendary. Never trade the > shotgun for the rocket launcher, lest you be very happy for eight shots, > then very unhappy for the short remainder of your life. > > OK my 2c: On legendary, I carry along 3 weapons with me if possile, all the time: Sniper, rocket launcher, and pistol (or shotgun, if available). It is time consumiong, but makes the game much "easier", because these weapons are all very useful in different situations. I haul the three along with me, drop one and pick up the other while walking ahead-it basically throws the dropped weapon up ahead. Once in a room, I will go in with the two I think I most need, and I will drop one when needed to pick up something else. Basically, I haul the two wepaons that I think I'll need into a room, and use them as needed, and liberally use the alien weapons when the situation demands (as described above-like the plasma pistol on the sentinals, or the needler on the elites (works GREAT); I also like the plasm,a rifle on the grunts. But I also prefer to silently whack the grunts when i can, to save ammo and to reduce the enemy without letting anyone know. Then I'll go back and pick up the one I dropped outside the area (usually the sniper) using an alien weapon to drop for it. And I use a lot of plasma grenades. | |||
