Question on Pillar of Autumn!

I give up! I am on the first level and still looking for
a way to get off the space wheel! I have marines
running around me! I assume space pods are all
gone? In an area were if one enters this room a
blast door closes me in and I am locked in! Can
anyone tell me what I did wrong? Where do I go
from the point I am at! I dont want to start over!
BTW, when I go to the end and turn right I can
get to a door but it wont open
