| Interesting report on gamespot: http://www.gamespot.com/all/news/news_6083688.html An extract: a.. Online gaming and broadband support drive console sales. Over one third of respondents expressed strong interest in console based online gaming. a.. However, gamers still prefer to go it alone. Despite interest in playing against others in an online environment, gaming remains largely a solitary activity and games that rely on social interaction have a relatively narrow addressable market. Over 73 percent of respondents claim to play games alone almost always or most of the time, and only 2 percent claim that they never play alone. This sums up the XBOX for me, I got Live a few weeks back and haven't really got into it. I love the single player games though. Jammy. | |||

Even if you take the above statistic (which was surveyed online, de-selecting the entire population of people who do not have a PC online), 70% of people do not have a strong interest in online console gaming. The last I heard 90% XB owners didn't have XB live. For the console with the largest emphasis on online gaming, 10% uptake does not equate to "driving sales", otherwise, the XB would have *well* outstripped the GC (which is hasn't), and beaten the PS2 (which is certainly hasn't). Finally, recent claims by both Sony and M$ as regards the 'record number of console gamers online' has been in the region of 100,000 people (can't remember the exact figure), which is about 3% of the number of consoles out there (30/40 million). </rant>

| It is more enjoyable to kill people than AI. More of a challenge and you get to rub it in to people, can't do that with AI, they don't have a sense of humour! I wasn't included in stats, I prefer online, offline takes a few hours to finish a game, then what, do the same thing over and over, the only game I have done that with is Halo, and KOTOR. Everything else gets boring fast if just AI, and alot of Live games, change, the maps change so you get a hole new experience. Star Wars Clone Wars....totally different gameplay all together from offline play...maps and bases change. Agreed. Plus the first console of this generation had a 56K modem BUILT IN as standard equipment. Where were all the online fans then? - Jordan | |||

I must admit to being a fan of online gaming too - however with a PC. I have XBOX live and haven't really gotten into it too much. I would also like to say, that a console need not go online to provide hours of entertainment.I have just had a friend round after work, and we sat and played multiplayer mariokart from 6pm until now basically. Had an great time. Lots of shouting, swearing and laughing - the game is truly awesome. Jammy T.

| another difference is that you will get to know your chums strategy. I also play games like mario cart, perfect dark, etc. on the split screen, it is still fun, but I know what they are going to do. Online however, you meet new people all the time, therefore, different minds and different strategies. Whole new game every time. That's the appeal of online gaming...for me anyways. The more people I play the more I learn, the better I get, the easier games are. | Also, unless you have four copies of a game, 16 controllers, four TVs and four XBOXes there's no way you're gonna have a 16 payers game at home!
