I had the router set up so that the Xbox used hard coded addresses within my network (ie not using DHCP). I couldn't get the upgrade to work this way. In the end I reconfigured temporarily for the router to supply DHCP and the Xbox to autoconfigure. The upgrade then worked. I could then put the settings back as before and everything was ok.
