Default Had a disk fail last night

And with hesitancy and trepidation I tried the old dunk in boiling water
trick.

Worked straight away....I was expecting a warped floppy disk(checks
spelling).

How long did you dunk it for, I have tons of scratched DVD's, they play but
if I ever want to sell them they look a bit ****ty. Does it improve the look
at all or just the play quality

no it won't fix those kind of scratches, it fixes errors where your
disk doesn't play but you can't much wrong with the disk. (at least I
don't think so he added just in case Bikini Whacks has heart failure)

For the really scratched disc you can attack it with brasso or silvo,
takes about 15 mins, you need to apply then buff, then apply then buff
etc etc until the scratches are gone.

Personally I go for thirty seconds but I suspect the fettling process is
probably over in the first few seconds. You'd really have to be trying
in order to shag the disc I'd say, it isn't even remotely bendy after a
good four minutes.

Looks-wise it (obviously) won't shift scratches but it sure as hell gets
fingerprints and stains off and leaves the printed side virginal.

Do you mean that the label stays intact, or does it get erased/removed? I
didn't know whether you were supposed to just float the disc on top of the
water or fully dunk it?

Fully dunked mine for about 15 seconds in water straight out of a boiling
kettle, didn't improve cosmetically apart from cleaning but it worked and
thats what mattered.

The label stays perfectly intact, no damage whatsoever.

Just let it float, turning once. Having said that, if it's been a
particularly problematic disc I spitefully hold it near the bottom of
the pan with some tongs (Halo 2 I'm talking to you, you bastarding
thing).

Well since the data is 'written' just under the printing (silvered side)
you should bloody hope it stays virginal!

A scratch on the bottom of a disk is far less worrying than a scratch on
the top.

And yes I know how CDs are manufactured, I'm just keeping this in simple
terms.
