| Sony PS2 owners, like myself and many other millions of folks, just sit & wait. If Sony were to reduce the PS3 price by 25%, PS3 sales would go up by 20-200% or more... If Sony were to reduce the PS3 price by 50%, PS3 sales would go up by 40-400% or more... Does Sony have access to calculators ? | |||

| well according to the idiots on these ng's, the people that didn't buy it are all just jealous jerks that don't make enough to buy it and all the systems. that's funny though cause I have like 50k so I guess im jealous or something cause I didn't buy a ps3 either. And when you are losing over $250 per each console you sell, you do that, and you bleed red ink even faster. - The Rich | |||

If Mercedes priced their cars at $1000 each, I'm sure that their sales would go up by 500% or more... If Apple priced their iPods at $20 each, iPod sales would go up by 800% or more... So why don't they? Obviously, it isn't as easy as simply reducing the price. Sony is packing a lot of expensive hardware inside the PS3. While we can argue whether or not that was a good idea, its a done deal. If a PS3 costs Sony $850 to manufacture, and it retails for $600, they are already losing $250 per console. Historically, hardware manufacturers make up the loss through software licensing and, eventually, through a reduction in the manufacturing costs. Sometimes this never happens (as with the original Xbox) because not enough software is sold. Yes, Sony is going to have to reduce the PS3 price because it isn't selling well, but if they reduce it too drastically, that gives them an even larger defict to erase. At $400, a loss of $450 per console, Sony would have to sell *45* games (assuming a $10 licensing fee) to each PS3 owner just to break even!

Pure geniuses. | |||

Pure geniuses. They've made more money from consoles in the last 10 years than any other company. Maybe this is a big mistake or maybe they recover by the end and eek out a little profit. MS would love to eek out even a little profit by the end of this gen.

Yeah they've made a lot of money and are now losing a lot of money lol. By a stupid plan. The plan was to sell a $600 machine and think people would buy it. Now we know they wouldn't. And because it would put Blu-ray players in a lot of homes, making it win the format war. Wrong! If it wins the format war it won't be because of any PS3 I can tell you that. And don't worry about Microsoft, they make lots of money and aren't losing money like Sony is.
