| http://www.next-gen.biz/index.php?op...59&Ite mid=53 The New, Smaller PSP By Colin Campbell Oft-muttered rumors of a new PSP are once again in circulation. Sony is, according to industry tittle tattle, definitely working up a smaller lighter version of its handheld. Questions such as 'when' and 'what will they do about storage' aren't finding answers right now though the company is sticking with UMD. Don't say you're surprised. This is Sony, after all. | |||

Release them on multiple formats? Yeah, right... But putting a HDD into the thing might be nice. Just think, you wouldn't need to constantly manage a stack of memory sticks for stuff. Anyways, how serious is this rumor, anyways? I've been sort of toying with the idea of a PSP as a combo media/game player. Yeah, the memory stick thing sort of sucks, but the games should help to counterbalance that a little. -- Win cash and giftcards just for clicking your mouse! http://www.netwinner.com/?signupCode=amuro98

A 1gb stick can be bought cheaply (readily available for about $25), hold a movie, a bunch of demos, all your game saves and some bonus game content (I've got something like 30 or 40 downloadable Taiko no Tatsujin 1 and 2 songs on mine, for example). I do own 4 memory cards, but that's because the original pack in was too small so I bought a half gig one, then 1gb sticks dropped to cheaply enough to make them sensible, then there was a deal for 1gb sticks for $15 with a coupon one week at Staples which made another one sensible for potential media storage. So I really only have two to juggle, and that second one should only come up in the event of an extended media intensive trip; anyone new to the PSP can avoid that issue entirely. You can currently buy 4gb sticks for under $90 and 8gb sticks for around $150 if you're really worried about juggling memory cards; expect those prices to continue to drop and larger cards to come out.

Well, one of the main uses I was eying the PSP for would be for my office MP3 player. In the past, my "MP3 player" has been nothing more than a 20GB USB laptop drive, and WinAmp running on my office PC. However, my current job doesn't allow me to plug in ANY type of device. As a result, all my coworkers have iPods or similar devices. I also have a 1 hour commute by train each way. So I figured, a PSP would be a good idea. Games/videos on the train, music in the office. I'll just have split my library, or just juggle tracks at home. My only concern is...IS Sony going to come out with a newer model or not, or should I just take the plunge? I notice Costco.com has a PSP, 2GB stick and 'media manager' software for $240, which seems rather expensive considering the prices you mentioned above... The bundle isn't an especially good deal; it is the cost of a non-deal 2gb stick and a PSP (you can find 4gb sticks for slightly more than that online), so it would require the software to be of value to you and a disinterest in buying a stick cheaply online. I don't use any media manager software; I use freeware apps to convert movies, and just drag and drop; I don't use it for MP3s tho, so there may be an advantage there. I think there may be freeware manager apps tho (probably not for Macs, which I use, and therefore I haven't look into them). There's always the possibility of newer hardware coming out soon, but the PSP just had a price drop and you have a need for an MP3 player and an interest in the PSP. Nintendo dropped the DS price months ahead of the DS Lite launch, and the DS Lite was more than the price dropped DS; I wouldn't be surprised if Sony followed the same model. And the PSP is not clunky the way the original DS is. You could alwys get the replacement plan and drop the old PSP into the garbage disposal if you want to insure against a new and better PSP coming out.
