They are restructuring their efforts to meet the massive global demand for their PS3 lineup. Those job cuts were analyst in the division that watched what other console makers were doing and since the PS3 is such a huge hit they simply were not needed anymore. PS3-1 Xfart 360-0

He stated it was due to Sony's shift towards online content. Anyhow, IBM reports an increase in profits the past year, and they are going to lay people off. In corporate circles, there is little connection to headcount size and how the company is doing. Today, companies are constantly looking to cut headcount to increase profitability. As for wanting spin, see how he spins Final Fantasy 13 not being exclusive to the PS3. - The Rich

The spinning is already going on at the FFXIII Gamespot forums. They're saying that the link doesn't actually say FFXIII will not be exclusive to PS3, but that unnamed FF games won't be exclusive to PS3, which they're saying is no surprise seeing as FF has appeared as a cell phone game before apparently.

I'm not a hateful person, but any company that tries to manipulate their customers in the way Sony has with Blu-Ray is despicable and deserves the ultimate punishment, bankruptcy. I doubt any executive from Sony Computer Entertainment actually reads this ng (maybe one of it's mirrors) but if they do, know this: you deserve this. You deserve it more than any game company ever had. The employees do not deserve this, I know how hard it is to move from a good job, but when you're employer is Sony and has completely throws out ethics, show some self- respect and leave. SCE, your days are numbered. It would be awesome to see you sell to Microsoft, but you have too much pride and arrogance to fall on your knees to an American company. An American company, that's wiping your blood of their hands right now after beating you to a pulp. If I seem a little sharp edged, you bet. Blu-Ray does nothing for games, you've been selling consumers a pack of lies and it hasn't worked. Then you went out and did something even more stupid, you lied to consumers about the power of the PS3, you made a series of stupid mistakes and then you boasted to the press. In the information age, you don't get to do that. You pay, generally with the life of your company in a bankruptcy filing.

He stated it was due to Sony's shift towards > online content. Yup, and as usual that's not actually what's happening: http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=24232 "In order to achieve the necessary cost reductions," the letter continues, "It is possible that there will be up to 160 redundancies in total across SCEE offices in the UK, WWS in Europe and in the Territories." In other words they are BLEEDING money. They are looking at "cost reductions" not any sort of shift in the game industry. More from that link: "Reeves concludes, "I also appreciate that what I have just announced will have come as a major and unwelcome shock, and it is something we have fought hard to avoid. However, the business targets that we face have regrettably made it unavoidable."" They are trying to reach "business targets" by making the reductions. Again, this has nothing to do with the industry as a whole. Sony is failing to make their profit targets, they are going in the tank and the layoffs are just the first step. More for Reeves here, he's going to be a busy boy: http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=24255 Buonanno leaves company as Reeves takes role President of Sony Computer Entertainment Italia, Corrado Buonanno, has officially left the company after 12 years. A spokesperson for SCEE confirmed that the executive had left due to normal business and not as a result of today's earlier revelations that the European division was due to cut 160 jobs across the region. "Corrado has been with Sony Computer Entertainment Italia for 12 years in which time we have seen PlayStation become a symbol for Italian people," commented David Reeves, chairman of SCEE. "Buonanno leaves behind him a very strong PlayStation team, in whom we have the utmost confidence." Reeves now takes on Buoannno's role as president of SCE Italia, while current COO of Sony Europe Jim Ryan will act as managing director. - Jordan
