| So, a leading Japanese investment firm says only half of the manufactured Ps3s have sold. That's in line with sites like VGCharts.org and nexgenwars.com Frankly, this is a disaster for Sony. It's own home territory has largely ignored the Ps3, despite games like Motorstorm and VF5 dropping for it, and North America has lost it's lust for all things Sony very rapidly since launch. Europe was supposed to be the real winner for Sony, but despite encouraging launch figures, the console slipped quietly away and is now selling behind it's rivals. The Playstation brand is no longer the sure-fire guarantee of success it once was, and you can bet Sony are going to rethink their strategy very soon. Analysts are already predicting that Halo 3 will help boost the 360's lead over the PS3 significantly this fall, and with the continuing poor sales, developers are unlikely to comit massive resources solly to the PS3 either. Blig Merk and his bonehead PS3 fanboys can all weep as they see their favourite movie player die like a stillborn lamb on the slaughter table. http://www.next-gen.biz/index.php?op...238&Ite mid=2 Monday, April 16, 2007, 12:41pm PT Updated: Monday, 16 April 2007 Analysts Predict PS3 Price Drop By Tom Ivan Despite reports that Sony may soon release encouraging profit forecasts, analysts are predicting a PlayStation 3 price cut before the end of the year. Image According to a report based on findings printed in Japan's Nikkei newspaper, researchers from leading Japanese investment firm Nomura stated, "We think Sony will find it hard to get through the financial year without cutting the price of the console, and expect further game segment losses of over $1 billion during that period." Nomura estimates that Sony has shifted half of the 6 million PS3s manufactured to date, and that along with a price cut, software releases are key to extending PS3s market reach. "We do not see the necessary drawing power in the title pipeline at this point. We expect Sony to take measures to increase market penetration of PS3 hardware, including extending the software lineup, and expect to review our medium-term estimates for the game segment if and when such measures come into view." Nomura's analysts believe Sony's console will eventually be profitable if appropriate measures are taken. "We think losses in the game segment are temporary and expect its earnings to improve. That said, we think the extent of profit growth in the segment will hinge on how well the PlayStation3 sells at the expected price and the launch of titles for it." | |||

The PS3 is selling so poorly, Sony Entertainment is slashing staff in Europe. http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=75362 | |||

| Blig Merk spake thusly: > > Of course, you all realize this poster is that idiot Swami Muttonhead. > It is probably appropriate the moron picked this latest "identity". > This was Swam Mollen in 2001, referring to Treemonkey: Notice how Bliggy ignores the topic of the post, and goes off on some rant about another user who hasn't been seen around here in years but whom he still obsesses over? Predictable but nonetheless amusing. > All the while, the PS2 > went on to become the MOST SUCCESSFUL CONSOLE IN HISTORY, with steady > sales and huge sales when the AAA games hit. Come on Bligmerk. You may be insane, but I know you're not an idiot. Even you -- yes, even the most tunnel-visioned, ignorant and unrepentant Sony apologist that the Internet has ever birthed -- must see the stark differences between the PS2 and the PS3. The circumstances around each console's launch could not be more opposite. Price, competition, demand, brand loyalty, game exclusivity... everything that worked in the PS2's favor is either absent in the PS3 or working against it. I still don't believe the PS3 is going to die out, and I think it has a chance of gaining some lost ground in 2008 and beyond. But how much money can Sony afford to lose on it before then? Dropping the price this year will only put Sony deeper in the hole (and with the $500 model discontinued, they're basically dropping the price after a de facto $100 price hike.) -Z- | |||
