| How predictable. The PS3 clearly has lost it's steam already. With price cuts of up to £30 off the cost of a PS3, and plenty of bunlding already going on, the PS3 barely manages to sell 1/10th of it's launch week total in it's third full week on sale. Yes, the 360 is selling 11k a week - but what is there to drive people to it? It's been on the market 18+ months, and has had no new releases this last week. The Ps3 has lost steam less than a month after release, and the Wi pisses on BOTH consoles from a great height, selling out despite shipping nearly 2x as many units as both competitors. Just as has happened in North America, and Japan, the Ps3 launches to great (but not astounding) stales, and then despite full availability, it just disappears without a trace. Meanwhile, the 360 continues to steam ahead solidly selling dispite a cheaper rival, and a supposidly superior one. Oh dear, even a price cut can't help the P$£!! http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=75161 "A rise in the number of Wii units dished out to retailers has lead to chocolate-like popularity of the console this Easter, with Nintendo telling GamesIndustry.biz it had sold more than 25,000 last week in the UK alone. Leaked Chart-Track figures showed that 17,000 PlayStation 3 units were shifted during the same period, while the figure for Xbox 360 stood at 11,000. A spokesperson for Chart-Track declined to comment on the data. According to a Nintendo spokesperson, "Last week was Wii's third biggest sales week since launch. Everything we are shipping, we are selling." The spokesperson conceded that the figure was boosted by the availability of more stock than usual last week, stating, "Sales in previous weeks weren't as strong as 25k. More units are shipped some weeks than others." However, he added, "We are making regular shipments, and we are consistent." The spokesperson went on to say that the Easter holiday was a major factor in the high figure for Wii units sold. "Easter was the catalyst for the spike in sales," he said. "It's a traditional gifting week and that was definitely a contributing factor, along with the fact that there was more stock than usual." It's still not clear when the Wii stock shortages will end - as the spokesperson observed, "Demand for the console is clearly huge and is exceeding supply." However, he added, "We are doing everything we can to get as much stock out there as possible." " | |||

If that's true (and I doubt it is), it means they've basically shut down several of the factory assembly lines already, which is very troubling indeed. There is NO shortage of PS3s. Stocks are piling up in warehouses in every market. To create an artificial shortage now by curtailing production is the absolute worst thing Sony could do. So few people actually want a PS3 that to not put one in the hands of every person who DOES want one would be absolute folly. But by the same token, manufacuring hundreds of thousands of consoles just to have them gather dust isn't good business either. Poor Sony. Rock and a hard place. -Z-

I swear, we are going to get to a point later this year where game companies start cancelling PS3 titles wholesale and you will say, "yeah, but the new Ratchet and Clank game will kick ass!". At some point, you just gotta stop fighting a losing battle and let the generation play itself out. It's obvious that the 360 and Wii are and will always be the top dogs, so why keep up the charade?

This shutting down of production is likely first starting with the dropping of the lower end PS3. - The Rich

It's obvious that the 360 and Wii are and > will always be the top dogs, so why keep up the charade? It's way, WAY to early to conclude what's "obvious." For all we know, Heavenly Sword may be the greatest game ever created, get straight 10s from every review site, and push millions of consoles. Final Fantasy VII did that for the PS1. You're basing conclusions on the sales figure of a console that has been out for less than half a year that only really has 3 or 4 exclusive titles. If the PS3 is only selling 120K units in NA in November and December, then Sony has major problems. Until that happens, we don't have enough data to make a valid conclusion. -- Bill Cable - Steelers Fan & Star Wars Collector http://CreatureCantina.com <----- funny! cable@creaturecantina.com

You're basing conclusions on the sales Do some research into this "Heavenly Sword" game. It's not going to be that great. I have a lot more faith in "Lair" 's pedigree. Neither game is enough to get me fired up about the PS3 yet, but who knows about the gaming population in general. I do agree with the part of your post that I snipped, where you assert that this winter will pretty much wrap up the 'console war'. As someone who has been gaming for 25 years, I'm just saying that it is *clear* to me that the PS3 is going to get its butt kicked to the cellar for this generation. It is going to take another surprise exclusive hit like GTA 3 or SOCOM for them to do any real numbers, and they are so far behind you're looking at several GTA 3s before they can dream of catching the 360. The "exclusive" part of the equation is what Sony is going to have real problems with. It would have been millions cheaper for them to obtain exclusives back before the system launched and the 360 started doing huge numbers last year. The price of poker went up substantially once the PS3 launched and nobody bought them.

Instead they prepare to ramp up the production numbers. Foxconn has just received certification from Sony to produce additional PS3s for the upcoming season (it was only Asustek before): http://www.digitimes.com/systems/a20070411PB202.html Ciao André -- "First get your facts; then you can distort them at your leisure." In the current (previous) generation, what made me get a PS2 was not any single great exclusive, but simply that is you wanted to play standard turn-based JRPGs, it was flat out the best machine to get, it had such a large number of them available. If the same situation repeats again, I'll get a PS3 (once they are cheaper).
