| Sales down dramatically on second week of release Sales of the PlayStation 3 have dropped dramatically on the second week of release in the UK, with official Chart Track figures revealing a fall of 82 per cent. Chart Track data is gathered from 7000 UK retail outlets representing 90 per cent of the software market, including GAME, Gamestation, Play.com, Asda and HMV. A spokesperson for Chart Track confirmed the figure to GamesIndustry.biz this afternoon, stating: "Yes, sales of PS3 hardware have dropped by 82 per cent." Last week, Chart Track revealed that the PlayStation 3 had sold 165,000 units in the first two days following the launch, making it the fastest-selling home console in the UK. "We publish the first week figures because there's such a clamour for them that we can't keep it a secret," said the spokesperson. This week's software charts revealed that sales of the top two PlayStation 3 titles, Resistance: Fall of Man and MotorStorm, had dropped by over 60 per cent. Sony Computer Entertainment Europe declined to comment. http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=23977 | |||

Hate to say 'I told you so', but there it is. Sony had so many PS3s stockpiled for launch, they were able to satisfy early adopter demand in one weekend instead of spreading it across months the way Microsoft and Nintendo had to. That's less that 30,000 sold in week two. Not bad for the UK -- hell, it's way more than the PS3 is selling in Japan right now -- but so much for the hope that the PS3 was going to magically catch on fire in Europe when the rest of the world can't be bothered with it right now. -Z-

| Was anyone expecting them to sell another 165K in the second week? I sure wasn't. Still, 30,000 is almost half what the 360 sold during its launch, so it's nothing to sneeze at. -- Bill Cable - Steelers Fan & Star Wars Collector http://CreatureCantina.com <----- funny! cable@creaturecantina.com | |||

| What no more free HDTV's Some go gently into that good night, Sony is like a 747 in nose dive, the pilots have bailed and the staff left are telling the passengers it's just turbulence. If you continue down the PS3 path, spend your hard on money on it you deserve what you get. The warning signs are pretty clear guys. Factor in that the PS3 is readily available across Europe whereas the Xbox 360 was sold out at this point in its life... and that it's a HUGE drop in sales... A 25%... a 40%... even a 50% drop is reasonable. 82% is significantly bad. I wonder how Sony will try to spin this... maybe using your exact assessment. > -- > Bill Cable - Steelers Fan & Star Wars Collectorhttp://CreatureCantina.com <----- funny! > c...@creaturecantina.com | |||

Of the 220k shipped into the UK, they sold only 198k so far. That means the last 22k are going to take at least another 2 weeks to sell by this rate. 82% falloff with NO supply problems proves that all the geeks, fanboys and sheep got their fix the first week and now there are no punters left to waste their money on an overpriced DVD player from Sony.... Look at all the spindocters crawl out of their holes trying to justify this...

Even though it may give you a good feeling that PS3 is failing, don't laugh... it would be really bad for us players if it is a total failure. We want it to share with the others, we don't want any one totally dominant. I would be fine with a 50/50 360/PS3 population (Wii is another category). I don't even hope that game console companies learn from this lesson, because it's not the first time this happens. Game consoles are *GAME* consoles, any other thing they might be used for should be just extra. We never wanted a $500 bluray player that could also play 2 games at launch, we wanted an HD game console, with GAMES!
