| Firstly, let me get this clear: I do not mind paying for a premium service, if what it offers is beyond the standard offerings. What I DO expect is some sort of basic functionality that does something simply and efficiently. Take, for example, the game spot download service. Either you do it for free and suffer slow servers and queueing system, or pay a small fee to get priority downloads. I think online gaming should be similar. However, Microsoft disagrees with us with regards to XBOX live gold and silver. I don't like having to shell out $50 a year on something that I get for free on my PC. Even MS have admitted that they can't charge for Live on their PC Games for Windows system - as users are not used to having to pay to go multiplayer. In other words, they are happy to give PC gamers what they want, but want to screw us console owners for playing the exact same games!! Sony offers free online play, and pays for it with content advertising and sponsorships on the PSn - or at least plans to. So sure, PSN is inferior to XBOX Live in nearly every way - no cross game invites, no in game chat, no decent matchmaking algorithms, no behaviour monitoring, that sort of thing. However, are these additions either necessary or something people would miss? If I can still go Online and do a multiplayer game on the PS3, and not pay a penny, it's not going to bother me that I can't invite people who are playing a different game! So if Sony can do it, (and afford to offer sotware like Home) for free, and even MS say they'll do it for free for windows users, why cant XBOX users get online multiplayer for free? | |||

You could always get yourself a 360 Elite. It comes with one free month of Live Gold!

In many cases someone pays for those servers. I was in a clan & contributed money every month so we would have our own server. I have no problem doing the same with Xbox live as it basically provides servers for every game I ever buy with no need for me to go to the trouble of running one myself. People conveniently tend to forget that someone is paying the bill for PC servers.

What I'm hoping from PSN is the same functionality as Live! for free..as they promised a year ago. I don't mind paying for Live! because the service is damn good. I paid top $ for my PS3 on the assumption that Sony would provide a similar service as Live! for free. I'm I right, or totally misguided?

I can honestly say that over the last year and a half on Live! I've never had a bad experience! And I'm on it more often than not. If I get any of that crap, I just mute them..problem solved.

What do you mean exactly? I am only asking because I played Motor Storm for the past 2 nights straight on the PS3 using a basic USB headset (I am going to get a blue tooth down the road) and in game chat is flawless. > no behaviour monitoring, ???

Have you tried multi channel chatting yet with your friends Steve (on the PS3)? I did this yesterday for the 1st time with a group of friends. It's a pretty kewl feature. The only thing is you can't surf around sony online / web browser or play games while you're in a chat, yet. I think Sony is headed in the right direction with their online and if it does in fact stay free that will be a huge feather in their cap over MS. Unless I'm mistaken I don't believe LIVE has this feature yet.
