Gauntlet Dark Legacy -- How to use legendary items?

How does one use legendary items during a boss fight?

I fought the Lich this morning, and I had the Book of Protection, but I
don't know if I actually used it or not. When I first appeared in the arena
with the Lich, there was a book icon hovering above my character's head. I
started fighting with regular and turbo attacks, and after a few second the
book icon disappeared. I defeated the Lich easily, but was I supposed to do
something special to use the Book of Protection? The manual for the
GameCube version doesn't cover this, and neither does the FAQ I downloaded.

I think that's exactly how its suppose to happen. If you have the correct
special item for a particular boss fight, you'll begin automatically using
it as soon as teh fight starts. I noticed that the special items usually
lasts until about half of the bosses' health is left.
