There are some chapters that haven't rocked my world. But I agree with
you overall. Turok Evolution is much better than I had anticipated.
It's a standard shooter but it's action packed and runs smoothly.
Worth $10 easily IMHO.

My main impression is that the level designers must be awful, or the game
engine is a real bitch to work with. The game is capable of some cool
stuff, it just isn't used properly, and the balancing is terrible. I'm
impressed by the landscapes, except that they are so contrived and boring.
But from a technical standpoint I think they are pretty good, and the game
runs smoothly. The controls are solid, though more options would be much
appreciated, especially as the game gets more difficult. The flying levels
are similar, they went to the trouble of making a simple, fun flying game,
then wasted it with boring objectives.

Though the engine is obviously at fault in some cases, too. Why would they
go through all of the effort to create a world full of trees and bushes and
plants, and then make it all worthless because you can't use them as cover?
The enemies apparently see right through it like it wasn't there, which,
unfortunately, is not the case for the player. Hell, you can't even hit the
ground to avoid fire effectively. Crawling barely gives you any protection.
What's also weird is that even standing up it looks and feels like you're
about two feet tall, I'm not sure why.

When I first started playing the game, I saw some bushes move like they were
being disturbed, and I thought "cool, that must mean there is an animal
there..." and of course there wasn't, they just seem to move for no reason.
(If it's supposed to be due to the "wind", please - wind doesn't move
individual plants as if they were being shaken.) And they give you poison
arrows - why? They don't work on bigger animals, as far as I can tell,
which would be the logical use for them. Maybe there's a use for them later
in the game, I don't know, but right now they seem to be a waste.

This is just one of those games that pisses you off more because of what it
could have been than because it's just terrible. If the game just totally
sucked, fine. But this game could have been really good if the commitment
had been there.

And don't even get me started on loading times. Sheesh.

For 10 bucks is it worth a shot? Sure. The controls are solid, and that
always goes a long way towards making a game playable. As you said there's
a lot of action. There are also cheat codes available that will let you
skip sucky levels, or go right to one you like, so that's helpful. But I
feel sorry for the people who paid $50, though I guess it was their own
fault for not reading reviews first.

On thing that turned me off was sniping alligators. IT
would take 3 shots to kill them and if you were far enough
away, they would not budge when shot. They would just lie
there and take it.

Mulit-player mode is worth the $10.
