I think it was actually based on the Bay Bridge which goes between Berkeley
and San Francisco rather than the Golden Gate since it had an island went
through an island (which would be Yerba Buena Island) that had a big parking
lot on it.

You'll notice there's also a lot of movies with car chases set in San
Francisco, too. It's the hills, baby! San Franciso's a great city to drive
in.

In a country the size of America I'd say 500 miles is 'quite close'.
Especially for a multi billion usd industry.

Not as close as, say, LA, but much closer than, say, dallas or boston or
New York or detroit.

(Which is closer, SF or Phoenix? And how big is Phoenix?)

Hollywood is North of LA so it is actually closer then LA to SF by a few
miles. (OK, I admit it, I'm nitpicking)

Since my point of reference is SF I can't say for sure but I believe
that Phoenix is closer to LA then SF is to LA.
