For free or for money?

I've noticed that a lot of people here are into different aspects of content-making, we've got writers, graphic makers, coders, template creators, etc.

As a rule, do you charge for people to use your work, or do you prefer to make it available for free? Why?

Why would anyone want to give away their services for free? Why would anyone want to get services for free, when we all know that you get what you pay for?

I offer some services for free to let them see what they are going to be paying for and show them that it is well worth the money. I find I am able to charge a little more because people know what they are getting and are happy to pay for it.

Some people give the work away for free in hopes that the traffic driven to their site will increase click through to links, or shop items. Others use a whole site of free material to cross market something related, but different from the content of the free site.

I've done some free work for friends and family, but otherwise I expect to be paid! I suppose I would probably make an exception for a good non-profit organization or something like that, but it hasn't come up.

I do give articles away sometimes, 1. so I can get a review, and 2. submitting them to article directories so other people can rip them.

In the past I have given away free gif and flash banners just so I could practice with my software.

Other times I will see somebody needing some help with a random problem and I will do the work for them for free.

Of course, I need to get paid, money is too scarce nowadays, right?

I'm already thinking about the end of year Holidays, trying to figure out my goals for the kids. My budget revolves around the utility company! On one hand, we need electricity, on the other hand, of course we need electricity, crazy woman!!

In my opinion paid content and other services are much better because mostly you are having a lot of workload and costs.
