Default Halo PC overrated?

YES.

I hadn't played the Xbox version but obviously heard Halo being hyped to the
max by Xbox gamers over the last few years. I bought the full PC game a few
days ago, and quite honestly, what is the fuss all about? It seems Xbox
owners are seriously starved of quality games, because PC Halo is just
another dime-a-dozen first person shooter.

A couple of issues in particular;

Level design...what the hell? Once you've seen the corridor style for a
particular level, you've seen 90% of the level. Also, the majority of rooms
serve no purpose at all (no command rooms, barracks, that type of stuff)
other than an excuse to have shootouts in.

In order to get the game looking impressive, performance is atrocious. In
order to get a playable framerate, visuals are atrocious (particularly
texture quality and screen resolution). Er, Houston, we have a problem here.
A playable framerate is obviously what I went for, and seriously, even 5
year old Half-Life looks more impressive on my rig (P4 2.4ghz, 1gig ram,
256mb Fx5900).

The console roots are apparent...all fighting takes place on ground level.

From what I saw (I gave up after the appalling Library level), Halo is very
repetitous. I remember the first time I played Half-Life, seeing and
experiencing something different around every corner. Halo has none of that.

Basically, I was seriously unimpressed. If anyone else hasn't ever played
the Xbox version, I'd highly recommend not just going out and buying it on
reputation like I did, but playing the Halo PC demo first.
