Yup, and as usual that's not actually what's happening:

"In order to achieve the necessary cost reductions," the letter
continues, "It is possible that there will be up to 160 redundancies
in total across SCEE offices in the UK, WWS in Europe and in the
Territories."

In other words they are BLEEDING money. They are looking at "cost
reductions" not any sort of shift in the game industry.

More from that link:

"Reeves concludes, "I also appreciate that what I have just announced
will have come as a major and unwelcome shock, and it is something we
have fought hard to avoid. However, the business targets that we face
have regrettably made it unavoidable.""

They are trying to reach "business targets" by making the reductions.
Again, this has nothing to do with the industry as a whole. Sony is
failing to make their profit targets, they are going in the tank and
the layoffs are just the first step.

More for Reeves here, he's going to be a busy boy:

Buonanno leaves company as Reeves takes role

President of Sony Computer Entertainment Italia, Corrado Buonanno, has
officially left the company after 12 years.

A spokesperson for SCEE confirmed that the executive had left due to
normal business and not as a result of today's earlier revelations
that the European division was due to cut 160 jobs across the region.

"Corrado has been with Sony Computer Entertainment Italia for 12 years
in which time we have seen PlayStation become a symbol for Italian
people," commented David Reeves, chairman of SCEE.

"Buonanno leaves behind him a very strong PlayStation team, in whom we
have the utmost confidence."

Reeves now takes on Buoannno's role as president of SCE Italia, while
current COO of Sony Europe Jim Ryan will act as managing director.
