re: my original post, I APOLOGIZE deeply, but I was mistaken in
stating that they were from the same negative. In fact they are from
TWO separate negatives, one exposed for the highlights and another
exposed for the shadows and they were composited in the way I
described. Obviously, photos with the intent of compositing to
compensate for extremes in exposure require that they be taken from
identical (by way of tripod) or nearly identical points of view, by
reframing according to edges.

Sorry for the mistake, but the tecnique remains the same for layer
composite and erasing to bottom layer.
