Extract the foreground and apply it over a new layer with the
desired background. Use the extract command in filters. In the
sample I used Corel knockout which is a similar to the Adobe
extraction tool. I didn't spend much time cleaning it up though.
In this case a new layer was made with a gradient using tones from the
image.
