More or less a beginner here:

php.net => no, for an extreme newbee it might me worth reading through the
main function chapters (i.e. the short lists of functions) to get a basic
understanding of the possibilities. Also, when I started, the user comments
gave me a lot more clarity on how to use different functions. Searching the
online documentation works excellent for me, although sometimes refrasing
search terms is needed,.

mysql.com => yes, get a basic SQL book and it will help a lot more.
