External drives like that literally are plug'n'play so long as the OS
supports the connection, I've been lent a 60gb drive in a firewire
connected enclosure. It's fast (about twice the speed of USB 2) but
still can't stand up to the speed of a drive connected directly to
the motherboard or a fast IDE controller card (of which I have drives
connected in both those ways too)
