Understanding LCD

Many consumers enter the TV market not having a clue what to look for when making a purchase. Undoubtedly, there are a number of television models that suffice a viewer’s needs, but understanding some of the basics of these units is important for your long-term investment.

So now that you have entered the store, you see an LCD television on sale. What the heck is an LCD TV? First off, LCD stands for liquid crystal display. LCD units are noted for their sleek design and can be great space savers considering their unique thinness. In addition, they can serve as a computer monitor as well since most units come fully-equipped with a VGA input.

As far as their operation is concerned, a thin, liquid-crystal layer of gel is sandwiched by two polarized panels. The gel contains what are known as pixels, and these pixels are held in place by a grid of wires. The amount of voltage applied to each pixel determines how light or dark the image appears that is displayed on the screen. A typical LCD television lasts for 60,000 hours, which makes them noted for their longevity. While quite pricey, they are definitely worth the money considering their high resolution and space-saving capabilities.
