Suffering Smokers

While fueling up the car is known to put a dent in your pocket, the taxes that are being placed on cigarettes are increasing at substantial rates. Research has indicated that though each of the fifty states in American has its own tobacco regulations, the general consensus is that cigarettes prices are only going to increase.

This is primarily due to a higher tax that is being placed on tobacco. For instance, ten states are charging a higher tax now compared to this time last year, with Alaska leading the way (a $.20 tax last year compared to a $2.00 tax this year).

South Carolina is now the only state that charges a cigarette tax of less than $.10, and 21 of the 50 states charge a dollar or more. New Jersey currently implements the highest tax at approximately $2.58 per pack. Unfortunate for smokers, the taxes don’t end there: individual cities and counties also impose taxes on tobacco as well.

As a result of these increases, tobacco consumers may want to consider driving those few extra miles if looking to make a large purchase. Sadly, the dollars saved on cigarettes may be spent on the gallons of gas used to make the journey.
