Socket AM2

The Socket AM2 was renamed and was formerly known as M2, this socket is a CPU socket that is created by AMD for desktop processors. It was released to the public in May 2006 as a replacement for the Socket 939 and the 754. It does contain 940 it is not supported with the Socket 940.
This socket features the DDR2 SDRAM and Hyper Transport 3.0. The socket chips can be inserted into the socket AM2 motherboard but can only work with the Hyper Transport 2.0. The DDR2 can actually move more data per
clock cycle as it uses less power that the DDR memory which was used in conjunction with the socket 939. It is about 2 percent quicker and it has 30 percent better memory bandwidth with DDR2 support.

The up and coming samples and the final product may be faster there are no for sure advances until the product is revised later on to take advantage of the surplus bandwidth. The core processors that support the
socket M2 will be the Orleans, Manila and the dual core Windsor. The socket AM2 is a part of the AMD next generation of CPU sockets with the Socket F for servers and the S1 for mobile use like in laptops.
