Making Sense Out of Sony

Just what do customers want? It sure seems that the media powerhouse Sony is still trying to figure this out. Recently, the company has announced its plans to release a 400 gigabyte PS3 model in the United States. According to www.gamepro.com, it is expected that this model will most likely hit the shelves on November 2.

Customers are probably beginning to grow frustrated with all of the shifts in prices that Sony has undertaken. After all, this is the fourth time that the company has made a significant change in the distribution of their Playstation 3 product. Back in April, Sony officially stopped producing its 20 gigabyte PS3 model (which cost $500) , claiming that the majority of sales were coming from the 60 gigabyte units priced at $600. Fast forward to July and the price of the 60 gigabyte model stands at $500, while a new 80 gigabyte model hits the shelves for $600.

Just what is the meaning of all these business decisions? The basic assumption is that Sony is struggling against its competitors, Nintendo and X-Box. Surprisingly, the 400 gigabyte model is expected to be priced at just $400. When you do the math, the price per gigabyte has dropped significantly in a 6-month period. Is Sony taking desperate attempts to maintain its customer base? It sure seems like it.
