How Much Energy Does Your Computer Use?

With all the focus today on “going green”, combined with the extensive use of computers, one has to wonder how “green” are we while on our computers? How much energy do computers use?

The average desktop computer uses approximately 65-250 watts. To find the exact figure, you can contact the manufacturer. With most devices and appliances, the label will show how much energy is used. This does not work with computers because it will tell the maximum amount, not the typical amount.

And this is just the tower. You can’t forget the accessories that a computer needs. A CRT monitor uses 80 watts and an LCD monitor uses 35. The monitor uses almost no energy when it is in “sleep” mode. But it must be completely dark with nothing on the screen – a screensaver that still shows an image will not conserve energy. An entire computer that’s in “sleep” mode will use approximately 1-6 watts.

It’s also a myth that the computer takes more energy to turn on and off than to keep it running. It is always a good idea to turn your computer off when you’re not using it. If this does not work for you, try putting your computer in “sleep” mode.
