Google Inc. Sponsors an Out of this World Contest
Google Inc., the number one search engine to date, would be sponsoring an out of this world contest. Literally! Dubbed as Google Lunar X Prize, Google Inc. spearheaded a $30 million contest for anyone who can successfully create a spaceship to land on the moon.
The competition is open to all private sectors and non-government organizations. This contest is one of the first few attempts to create a race to space! Google Inc. calls all aircraft designers all over the globe to create an unmanned lunar spacecraft and take home the grand prize of $30 million!
A similar contest was held successfully in 2004 sponsored by a private company, Ansari. SpaceShipOne emerged as the grand winner and paved way for the creation of commercial aircraft manufacturing industry. NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) also pioneered such competitions but only offers prizes up to $750,000. Google Lunar X Prize is by far one of the biggest space competitions today. Space technology enthusiasts all over the world are now getting their crafts ready to enter the Google contest. Most spacecraft expert would estimate the cost of developing and creating a spacecraft to be around $20 million to $60 million USD.
One of the objectives of the competition is to educate the public about the environment of the moon, one of earth's closest space neighbors.
